Train of the Week! - 5% off the Hornby 60!
The Class 60 By Hornby!
Our train of the week is the popular Class 60 by Hornby! This is an excellent model all round, with brilliant detail in all departments, with smooth running. working lights, and an 8Pin DCC socket ready to allow easy decoder fitting for DCC equipped layouts. It is available in multiple liveries, with DB Cargo and GBRF Variants currently in stock, with more liveries on the way as part of Hornby's 2022 range.
The current tooling in use by Hornby offers significant detail advantages over the Lima Class 60 that it essentially replaces, with serious upgrades to the moulding as well as separately fitted parts that are not seen on the Lima model, such as improved horns and windscreen wipers on the cab ends. The roof moulding is similar, however the Hornby model is of course marginally better, with a more realistic colour on the exhaust, and more detail such as rive4ts that are missed off the older Lima model.
The sides are similar, which is easily done considering the bland, flat sides nature of the Class 60, the doors on the Hornby model is more realistic, being inset into the sides rather then the Lima version, where the doors appear to be raised out of the body. The grilles on the side of both models are good, with the Lima version showing the support beams, whereas the Hornby version does not, and instead is plain black with now internal structure showing through, although this is not a downside at all and overall is more realistic and effective.
The underframe and chassis are very well presented, and is better than the lima model in every aspect, showing that the Hornby model is a good upgrade. the underframe is very well moulded, and features printed details such as warning symbols and fuel gauges on the fuel tanks. The bogies are also very well detailed and realistic, and run smoothly over pointwork and even 1st radius track, although it is of course inadvisable to do so. The engine is a very smooth and quiet runner, and as previously mentioned features a socket for a 8 Pin decoder, so it can easily be fitted with DCC for use on DCC layouts, which is of course a significant upgrade from the old lima model.
Overall, the Hornby Class 60 is a very well detailed model, and stands up against its only real alternative, but also is a well detailed, excellent runner in its own right, and at our price of £169 it is certainly worth every penny!
